The 2009–10 Augsburg Wrestling season was Augsburg's 28th season at the NCAA Division III level. The season marked the 11th national championship in Augsburg history, the first under head coach Mark Matzek. Matzek was named Division III National Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association while assistant head coach Jared Evans was named National Assistant Coach of the Year.
The team completed the season with a perfect 12–0 record[1] and finished first in all regular and post season tournaments where team scores were kept. On January 10, Augsburg won the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the second straight year.[2]
At the Great Lakes Regional, Augsburg qualified nine wrestlers, winning the tournament.[3] On March 6, Augsburg won their 11th team title at the NCAA National Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Paul Bjorkstrand, Tony Valek and Orlando Ponce all finished individual runners-up, marking the first since 1989 that a Division III team claimed the overall team title with no individual national titlists. Augsburg had five additional All-Americans, including Jason Adams, Jared Massey, Zach Molitor, Josh Roberts and Andy Witzel.
Preseason
On May 7, 2009, Augsburg Athletics Director and former head wrestling coach Jeff Swenson announced that Mark Matzek, who had been serving as interim head coach since July 2008, had been appointed to the position on a permanent basis. Joining Matzek was Jared Evans as assistant head coach.[4]
Augsburg will begin their season with their annual Open Practice and Fall Banquet on October 31, 2009.[5] Also, prior to the dual with the University of Nebraska – Omaha on January 22, 2010, Augsburg will be hosting a "Six Decades of Dominance" celebration for alumni, family and friends.[6]
Incoming Class
The incoming class for freshmen and transfers was announced on September 15, 2009.[7]
